NOTES FROM JUDY

Thank you for the kind words on the loss of my cousin, Rich Nielsen. I have a couple of photos of the family and a few words at this URL: http://www.ossweb.com/mirror-100101.html.

For some reason, my e-mail program did not send the last e-zine to everyone. I believe I have fixed the problem. In the meantime, last month's e-zine is online at http://www.webgrammar.com/fft09-2001.html

My most recent monthly Webgrammar Dictionary Winner is Muhammad Furqan Haroon, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. More on how to win a free dictionary at http://www.webgrammar.com/contest.html

Demystify CGI by reading his brand-new ebook, "How CGI Works and Answers to Other Questions You Didn't Know You Could Ask." Download it here!

To learn more about Will Bontrager and WillMaster, go to BontragerConnection.com

Sooner or later you need CGI. Then you need WillMaster.

DID YOU KNOW?

Difference between e.g. and i.e.

Have you seen the little forms e.g. and i.e. and wondered what they meant? Okay, I'll tell you. Be aware that you generally use abbreviated forms like these only in informal or technical documents, or documents where space is at a premium (catalogs, forms, etc.).

You use i.e. when you mean "that is." You also use it when you're restating the idea (to be more explicit) or expanding upon it. The origin of i.e. is "id est."

Example: We provide all retailers with the standard discount, i.e., 10%.

You use e.g. when you mean "for example." The origin of e.g. is "exempli gratia."

Example: Shertzer's book has a number of elements, e.g., punctuation, capitalization, parts of a sentence, and confusing words.

In American English, one generally follows i.e. and e.g. with a comma.

Barb Alexander has some good information on this subject at http://209.52.189.2/article.cfm/8707/52862/P>

WRITING AND JOURNALISM

HOW BOOK PUBLISHING WORKS by Katherine Neer and Marshall Brain
A look at the process of creating and publishing a book so you can see everything that's involved. This year "How Stuff Works" created:

"How Stuff Works," and "How Much Does the Earth Weigh?" They take you behind the scenes to see how the "How Stuff Works" book was created. It's good to keep in mind, as you are reading this article, that they were actually working on both books simultaneously so that they would have the same release date.
