Food for Thought September 2002

CONTENTS

NOTE FROM JUDY

1. I regret to announce that there are a number of words that new sp*m filters consider potential problems, like sp*m, fr*e, bon*s and unsu*scribe. I will try to cloak these words using asterisks so your ISP doesn't block this ezine.

What a shame that we've gotten to the place where this is necessary. But, as I'm telling subscribers to my business ezine (Communication Expressway), if it means getting my message through, I'm gonna do it. However, I've begun to see spammers doing what I did (writing "fr*e," etc., and wonder if my effort is in vain.

2. E.A. Fignini is our latest dictionary winner: "Hi Judy! My dictionary came in the mail today! Thank you so much! My other dictionary is over 15 years old, so I'm excited to have a nice, shiny, new one!"

When I get messages like this, I sometimes jump up and dance around the office. Enthusiastic messages fill me with delight.

3. Recently, my mother had two strokes, and I'm leaving soon for my second visit since she had her second stroke. I'll fly to the Pacific Northwest. My siblings and I hope to get her settled in her new digs at our brother and sister-in-law's home. We'll also pack up and shut down her home. What a joy to know that her progress is excellent, and that she has the promise of more good years to come.

The History of Copyright

This is the home page of the forthcoming book "The History of Copyright: A Critical Overview With Source Texts in Five Languages" by long-time Webgrammar subscriber Karl-Erik Tallmo, to be published in 2003.

The book will contain a 50-70 page introductory essay in English (and probably also in Swedish) about the rise of copyright and how people in different times regarded the role of authors and authors' rights. The bulk of the book will consist of important and hard-to-get source texts, e.g. from 15th century Venice, 18th century Britain, France and USA as well as Swedish legislation concerning freedom of speech and authors' rights from the early 19th century. All of it in the original languages, with comments and summaries in English http://www.copyrighthistory.com/index.html

DID YOU KNOW?

What's the Difference Between "Toward" and "Towards"?

No difference. It's the difference between using American English and British English. The general rule of thumb is to use "toward"-- when it regards distance--if you're writing to an American audience or from an American perspective, and "towards" if you're writing to a British audience or from a British perspective (take into account how many countries around the world use British spelling).
