NOTE FROM JUDY
Thanks for your insightful comments, encouraging me to make changes in the way I presented the dictionary give-away. Here's what I discovered:
There is an interest in signing up for a free dictionary. By using more descriptive words to present it, many more people subscribed. While I had no entrants in January, I had 104 in February. The winner lives in the UK.
I took a poll asking those who didn't sign up to explain why. Out of 61 replies I learned that most people either had enough dictionaries or didn't want to give out personal information.
Also, I collected some excellent ideas. Each month I'll give the winner the choice of a dictionary or one hour of business services (professional mentoring) worth $50: copyediting, critiquing, etc. or coaching. The person who suggested this said, "...most people want to know how they can do better what they love to do, and I am one."

D J MARTIN FOUNDATION March 29, 2000 - British Columbia, Canada: Twenty-four-year-old DJ Martin was stabbed to death while helping a friend move his household belongings. Earlier, DJ's friend, concerned about his roommate's erratic behavior, decided to move out and asked for help. DJ cheerfully agreed to pitch in. One moment a group of people were working together, and moments later, one lay dying in the hallway after the roommate stabbed him eight times.
I encourage you to visit the site and see how one family refused to be paralyzed by grief. In less than a year, they found a way to honor DJ's memory by helping other British Columbia families of murder victims. DJ's father, Jerry - my client, colleague, and friend - is president of Better Internet Bureau.

DID YOU KNOW
TOWARD AND TOWARDS - Both are correct, but "toward" is used more in American English, and "towards" is used more in British English.
UNIQUE - This word means "one of a kind," not "unusual." It's best not to modify it (don't say "very" unique or "quite" unique: just say "unique.")
WHOSE AND WHO'S
WHOSE is the possessive form of "who." Example, "Whose voice was that?"
WHO'S is a contraction meaning who is or who has. Example, "Who's the driver of that car?" (Who is the driver.)

FOLK ART IN BOTTLES Whimsey bottles," or "puzzle bottles," are constructions or scenes assembled inside bottles. The earliest examples of the art form date from the eighteenth century, but most seem to date from 1890-1930. The most well-known form is a ship, but almost anything that can be built or whittled has been put into a bottle and can be seen here: crosses and crucifixions, fans, chairs, spinning wheels, wishing wells, photographs, buildings, tools, saloon scenes, fanciful bird trees and complicated interlocking puzzles.

PEOPLE FOR EDUCATION
People for Education is made up of parents from public and Catholic schools in Ontario working together to preserve fully publicly-funded education. It believes that a fully publicly-funded education system is one of the cornerstones of the kind of civil society in which we want to live.
The organization designed an elementary school survey which tracks the effects of changes to its education system by asking parents to take yearly inventories in their schools. Every year it asks parents to count things like class sizes, portables, parent fundraising, computers, educational assistants, and gym teachers. Gathering this information allows them to measure the effect of changes as they are implemented. The data is analysed with the help of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), at the University of Toronto. Take advantage of the information in these valuable surveys.
