Food for Thought - February 2002

CONTENTS

NOTE FROM JUDY

There's been considerable discussion on the Internet lately as to whether or not it's best to have full text e-zines, or just the beginning of an article and a URL leading to a Web site. In a way, this is kind of a "teaser." I just read comments on a discussion list from someone who is legally blind, and it cemented my commitment to staying with text only for this e-zine and my business publication, Communication Expressway. I'll publish the writer's remarks about the value of keeping the full text format in the March issue of Communication Expressway. If you're interested in improving office, presentation, writing, and technical skills, I invite you to subscribe. You can find information at http://www.ossweb.com/ezine.html

WINDOWS KEYSTROKES AND TIPS

Printing across a Web page

Have you sometimes found that the text on the right of a Web page is cut off when you print it out? If this happens often, go to the Menu bar and choose File/Page Setup, and click on "Landscape." It may not be a perfect solution, but if printing content is important, you can usually get it all by changing the Page Setup default.

DID YOU KNOW?

Separate and Joint Possession

To indicate separate possession, add the apostrophe to EACH individual's name.

Examples:
  * The winner's and the loser's comments.
  * The McElwains' and the Ochmans' houses.

If any names are replaced by a possessive pronoun, reword if necessary, e.g., "my and the buyer's signatures" is awkward. Try "the buyer's and my signatures" or "the seller's signature and mine."

To indicate joint (or common) ownership, add the apostrophe to the FINAL name only.

Examples:
  * The Johnsons and the Lintners' property.
  * Jack and Judy's business.

Always follow a company's preference, even if it differs from the rules.

README
Will the Internet empower the reader or simply sully journalistic standards? Will tomorrow's journalists chop code as fluently as they craft their writing? ReadMe was launched December 12, 2001, under the auspices of New York University's Department of Journalism.
