NOTE FROM JUDY

How different Christmas celebrations are in various parts of the world. I grew up in Washington State, where Christmas was celebrated in a rather traditional way. Many of the people in the area had European ties. We always had a fir tree, which we decorated with items mostly saved from year to year. We often had snow at that time of year, which we children loved. We prayed that school would close. Often. I mean we prayed often that school would close often. And it happened. Occasionally.

During the holiday season, we sang Christmas carols at school, church, and home. And most Christian churches held separate Christmas pageants, which were, without exception, hilarious. Since children played most of the parts, you can imagine what they were like. They still are. Hilarious. Adorable. Refreshing.

When I lived in Hawaii, I laughed out loud (with joy) at Christmas decorations. Palm trees rather than evergreens. The weather was so warm. People wearing shorts and t-shirts running around shopping for Christmas presents. Possibly turkey for dinner, but more likely an outdoor event. On the lanai. Such fun and color. And there are Christmas pageants.

Arizona is similar to Hawaii, but a bit cooler in the winter. Still, the setting for Christmas is so different and delightful. Cactus, palm trees, and so much more. Including Christmas pageants.

What is your Christmas culture? The setting? The activities? Let me know and I'll publish in the next issue. A blessed Christmas and a very special New Year!

I also want to mention a just-published book by my friend, attorney Maria Speth. In this practical guide, Protect Your Writings: A Legal Guide for Authors, Speth provides a comprehensive yet easy-to-understand description of the applicable laws that affect authors and their works. Illustrated with examples from real cases and real situations, Protect Your Writings covers four main areas of intellectual property law and the interplay between these areas as they relate to authors. GRAMMAR, USAGE and STYLE -More on Numbers from Chicago 16

Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition (9.2) talks about its general rule for zero through 100 and certain round multiples of those numbers. Let's start talking about exceptions.

Example: Twenty-two cats from twelve families were packed into one room.

9.3 In scientific/journalistic contexts, many publications spell out only single-digit numbers and use numerals for almost all others.

9.4 Any of the whole numbers mentioned in 9.2 followed by 100, 1,000 or 100,000 are usually spelled out (except in the sciences), both in approximation or exactly.

Example: Some forty-eight thousand persons attended the exhibit. --but-- The official attendance at this year's exhibit was 48,126.

It succinctly and completely covers the legal information that authors need to safeguard their creative works. It answers the questions writers may have as well as the questions they might not know to ask.

COPYWRITING TIPS FROM THE HOMELESS
Pity works sometimes, says Becky Blanton, but humor goes a lot farther in separating people from their money - especially if you're homeless and desperate. There are dozens of great signs out there, but here are some great examples and some tips I've prepared so you each learn the secrets of some of the best headline writers I've seen in a while. I have been homeless (see my TED Global 2009 talk) and I can honestly say the homeless have some of the best sense of humor I've seen anywhere - and the best copywriting skills too!
