NOTE FROM JUDY
1. Finally, I've begun a business blog. It's at http://www.ossweb.com, and covers many areas, including those of interest to Webgrammar visitors. I'll use it as one more way to give grammar and style tips. Any time you have a question for the blog, contact me. And feel free to leave comments on any of the messages that are on my blog.
2. November was a month of celebration. My mother, Ethel Crook turned 95, and much of the family gathered in Bellingham, Washington to take part in a tribute to her. We were joined by many friends and a number of former neighbors, and former music students. My brother's PowerPoint presentation was awesome. And the musical performances (Mother is a musician and a retired music teacher) by grandchildren were exquisite.
We also had a surprise visit from Richard A. Marshall (Swil Kanim), http://www.swilkanim.net/, an incredibly talented violinist. Before he performed, he paid tribute to the woman who stood up for him when he expressed the desire to learn violin, and when he wanted to play in the Whatcom County Symphony. (It was unusual that such a young boy would be invited to play in the symphony). In both cases, Mom did and said what was necessary to give this talented youngster a chance to follow his passion. There wasn't a dry eye in the room when he explained what her advocacy had done for him. I learned something new that afternoon, although it didn't surprise me. She's quite a woman.
You can see some of the pictures and read a bit about the party at http://www.judyvorfeld.com/ethelcrook.html.
I look forward to visiting with you in December. To those who live in the U.S., I wish you a happy Thanksgiving.

DID YOU KNOW - HOT NEW WORDS FOR 1621
According to Merriam-Webster's the hot new words for the year 1621 were: allspice, carefree, easy chair, exultancy, literati, moralist, polymath, referee, steward (verb_, unerring, disrespect (noun), errancy, hebetude, inclement, plagiarism, self-pity, self-serving, squalor, timeserving, and virulence
Someone recently asked if "amiable" and "amicable" were the same. Here's my response:
There is a difference. "Amiable" suggests generally agreeable; being friendly, sociable, and congenial.
"Amicable" is also about good will and friendliness, but also suggests a peaceful setting.

CHILDREN'S BOOKS This program is currently focused on the children of northern Uganda, where a brutal civil war has caused unimaginable tragedy for the children of the area. To escape the danger, some 40,000 village children flock to the cities every night, where they sleep in shelters or on sidewalks. Then, each morning, they walk miles back to their villages to go to school or work until they return to the cities at night. To help these children find comfort at night, students at all levels are invited to make story books for them to look at before going to sleep in the shelters. Containing beautiful artwork and calming text, one purpose is to help the children find momentary peace of mind. Another is to help them read. http://www.thememoryproject.org/childrensbooks GRAMMAR
