In this issue:

At noon on July 21, space technicians and support staff who helped track
Apollo 11 on its 400,000km journey to and from the Moon toasted the
success of the 1969 mission. About 100 former staff, formerly based at
NASA’s Carnarvon space tracking station (callsign CRO), have returned
to WA from around Australia and overseas to celebrate the historic event.
Organiser Terence Kierans, who was at his console in Carnarvon the day
Neil Armstrong stepped on the Moon, is reflective after a weekend of
reliving space history. Full article here: http://cli.gs/Yt3BrW

GRAMMAR, USAGE and STYLE - A Few Common Prefixes
From the pen of Harold V. Cordry
(read his comments at http://webgrammar.ning.com)

eu- A Greek prefix meaning good, well, or praise.

dys- Greek prefix meaning bad or difficult.

For example: a "euphemism" is the expression of something in a "good" (positive) way, as distinct from a "dysphemism," which is its opposite.

Think of or find a few examples of dysphemisms and euphemisms. (Using a dictionary is not prohibited.)

anti- Against, opposite, opposed to. Look up "Antarctic."

ante- Before, in position, order, or time. Look up "ante meridiem." (a.m.)

post- After, as in "post meridiem" (p.m.); cf. "ante meridiem" a.m. ["cf" is an abbreviation of the Latin word "confer," which means "compare."]

Of course, "post" is also paired with "pre," as in "pre-game" and "post-game."

JOHN JACOB OMENHAUSSER CIVIL WAR SKETCHBOOK
Confederate soldier John Jacob Omenhausser was imprisoned at the Union prison camp in Point Lookout, Maryland, from June 1864 to June 1865, near the end of the American Civil War.
While at Point Lookout, Omenhausser documented prison life in sketchbooks with vibrant watercolors. His paintings were annotated with captions and dialog and, while intending to be humorous, often touch upon the grimmer aspects of camp life.

This little creature, no bigger around than my thumb, is a construction fiend.
It continuously pops down, gets gravel (whatever) in its mouth, leaps up, and spits out the contents,
all the while building fences. Or little mountains. It's magnificent.
