NOTE FROM JUDY

1.  Last month we gave away four books. The first, "UnderstandingDad,"went to Shelley. And the other three books, written by Calamity Jan, were sent to Duff, Trisha, and Jean. Thanks, Norman Lieberman of www.understandingdad.com and Jan Pierson of www.calamityjan.com for your contributions.

We have a totally different type of book to give away this month, thanks to Mona Scott (Mrs. Bluezette): Mrs. Bluezette's Grammar Guide, Writing Tips for Broadcast News.  The index to this superb reference book is itself a work of art. Website: http://www.newsblues.com/grammar.htm
I will collect all emails submitted the first two days after publication, then do a random drawing for the winner. Send your entry to:
mailto:judyvorfeld@webgrammar.com?Subject=GrammarGuide.

2.  A note from the July winner of a Merriam-Webster's dictionary: "Thanks for picking me to win this much-needed Webster's Dictionary! The copy I have now is from 1977 and ends at former President Jimmy Carter as the 39th U.S. President. This is an excellent prize!" --Mrs. Sher Wellman

DID YOU KNOW - HOW TO USE [SIC]

*Main Entry: 3sic
Pronunciation: 'sik, 'sEk
Function: adverb
Etymology: Latin, so, thus -- more at SO
Date: circa 1859
: intentionally so written -- used after a printed word or passage to indicate that it is intended exactly as printed or to indicate that it exactly reproduces an original <said he seed [sic] it all>

Let's say that I'm quoting someone, and there's an obvious typo. In that case I insert [sic]. It's only used when you're quoting something that has an obvious error. Could be spelling or could be omission of a word or could be a number of other things. Error or omission.

*By permission. From Merriam-Webster's Collegiate(R) Dictionary at
www.m-w.com by Merriam-Webster, Incorporated.

NELLIES_ENGLISH_PROJECTS
Some people think students should be sitting in a classroom, copying sentences from the board, jotting things down in their notebooks or reading from their books. I would rather you figured out what the world is all about through the Internet. Learning English as a Second Language can be as natural as learning a first.

You will learn to plan and complete relatively simple research projects and develop social and educational skills needed for planning more complex projects in the future. By gathering, analyzing and synthesizing information from several sources, you will learn to prepare and present well-focused reports, both spoken and written for a variety  of purposes and audience.
