*  Missing Genetic Pieces: Strategies for Living with VCFS. A good and
trusted friend, Kas Winters, just announced publication of this intriguing
book by Sherry Baker-Gomez. Here are some excerpts from her release:

Sherry's book is titled Missing Genetic Pieces: Strategies for Living with
VCFS, the Chromosome 22q11 Deletion. It describes the history and anomalies
involved in missing just a small bit of genetic material. The foreword is
written by Dr. Robert J. Shprintzen, the man who delineated (discovered) it.

Sherry's son has the deletion and wasn't diagnosed until he was 18. She was
so frustrated with all of his health problems that she went back to school
to get a degree in nursing in her search for answers. The book contains all
the things she wished she had known when her son was younger, including
physical, developmental, mental and psychological ramifications of the
disorder. (There are 187 different anomalies associated with VCFS.)

She has included information on coping with family and couple relationship
issues, financial planning, and other things that make a huge difference
when a family has a child with a disorder. The book includes personal stories
and advice from families who have members with VCFS. Sherry has done a
remarkable job. I did the illustrations, cover design and I formatted and
edited the book.

VCFS often goes undiagnosed. Most doctors are not familiar with it and the
symptoms vary and can easily be confused with other medical problems. There
is a simple FISH test that can be given which definitely identifies whether
or not a person has Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome. This book is, I believe,
literally a Godsend to families affected by VCFS. It also offers helpful
information to anyone with any type of genetic problem and families dealing
with learning disabilities or other challenges with their children. If
anyone you know could benefit from this book, it's available at:

DID YOU KNOW - Has lain

Q.  I've been teaching ESL for 15 years and am still puzzled by the use of
"has lain," since I've never said it nor have ever heard anyone else use
it. How common is it? May I have good logical examples for my students?

A.  I promised this ESL teacher that I'd ask my subscribers to help with
these two questions. Can you help?

HISTORY

THE WORD ON THE STREET: Broadside at the National Library of Scotland.
For almost 300 years until the mid-19th century, broadsides filled the
place occupied today by the tabloid press. Originally they were single
sheets of paper, printed on one side only, designed to be read unfolded
and posted up in public places. At first they were used for printing
royal proclamations, acts, and official notices. Later they became a
vehicle for political agitation and what is now known as "popular
culture," such as ballads and scaffold speeches.

ACCESS IN THE FUTURE TENSE
The Council on Library and Information Resources produces a number of
written works to inform the community of library specialists on a host
ofimportant and pressing topics, including preservation awareness,
resources for scholarship, and digital libraries. Discussions of
preservation are seldom wholly separated from those of access, but it
is remarkable the extent to which people who are not professionally
involved in preservation or conservation talk about preservation
exclusively in terms of access. What will happen to the preservation
mission of libraries or archives when they will not have to preserve
materials in order to provide access? How do we prevent preservation
from being further marginalized within these institutions?
