In this issue:

Greetings from the Sonoran Desert in the summer. One of my jobs is
to stay cool. Physically and emotionally. Usually I can. And do.
Father's Day, however, my sewer line backed up, and it took a couple
of hours of my brother working mostly outside while I worked inside
mopping up backed up water. David wins the competition for hottest
father of the day. Bless his heart for knowing how to help and doing
something about it.

Social Networking. I'll keep on you about this, because it's just
as important as learning all the netiquette and other aspects of
email. It's here to stay, can be a powerful way to communicate, and
I hope you'll visit http://webgrammar.ning.com and dip your toe
(virtually) in the water.

I recently set up a ning.com site for the people in two of my local
think tank groups. It's closed, so only those who are accepted by
me as members have access, and we're approaching some of our areas
of discussion by this medium as a nice complement to our monthly
meetings.

Do consider how you can use it with a family group, civic or church
organization, or whatever would work. And remember, on Webgrammar,
no one will make fun of you: you're part of our family. We just
share, learn, grow, and share.

GRAMMAR, USAGE and STYLE - From the pen of Harold V. Cordry
(read his comments at http://webgrammar.ning.com)

Talk of "replacing" Supreme Court Justice David Souter, who plans to retire,
reminds us of another use of that verb. You take a book off the shelf, have
a look at it, and then put it back, which is to say that you "replace" it
in the place where you found it: He replaced the book on the shelf.

WILLIAM GEDNEY PHOTOGRAPHS AND WRITINGS
From the mid 1950s through the early 1980s, William Gedney (1932-1989) photographed throughout the United States, in India, and in Europe.
From street scenes outside his Brooklyn apartment to the daily chores
of unemployed coal miners, from the indolent lifestyle of hippies in
Haight-Ashbury to the sacred rituals of Hindu worshippers, Gedney
recorded the lives of others with remarkable clarity and poignancy.

THE HIDDEN ART OF FORE-EDGE BOOK PAINTING
From the earliest period when books began to be printed, artists and
bookbinders embellished their covers with designs and illustrations.
The painting of book edges developed later, but few readers have ever
seen these decorations. They are an obscure art form, hidden beneath
a surface of gold. It is as if you discovered magic on a book before
you even read its opening lines.
