In this issue:

  1. Hope everyone is having a beautiful spring. The Sonoran Desert in Arizona is lovely, and taking photos, especially early in the morning, is delightful. I'm enjoying the pink and yellow cactus blossoms in my front yard.

My brother and I have been to Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix a number of times recently, and will be there as this is being published. The Chihuly Exhibit is still drawing crowds and thrilling visitors.

Recently my friend, Martha Retallick, of Tucson, joined me with her Nikon, and we visited both the Desert Botanical Garden and Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium, to give her a wide variety of subjects. And of course, I brought my camera. See a few pictures I've taken recently.

  2. I keep learning more about the social networking site, Ning, and invite you to stop by http://webgrammar.ning.com and pay a visit or join. We're having fun with Cartoon Professor Hal Cordry, as he responds to the grammar and style questions of others.

Here's the kind of response he gives to other members' questions:

"The nurse was a cheerful but phlegmatic person, unexcited in the face of sudden emergencies." "Phlegmatic" (sluggish and dull) makes it difficult to imagine a cheerful phlegmatic person, or a person who is cheerful and stolid. So "but" helps somewhat in that regard. But

I think "phlegmatic" is simply the wrong word, and so is "unexcited." Certainly it’s the wrong word to characterize someone who appears calm in the face of "sudden emergencies." Physicians and nurses who remain calm in an emergency aren’t "unexcited"; they’re in control, as they must be. A phlegmatic person is by nature dull and sluggish and slow, probably incapable of much excitement. No, I wouldn’t say cheerful and phlegmatic either. The two aren’t logical complements. It’s rather akin to saying someone is cheerful and exceptionally tall.

GRAMMAR, USAGE and STYLE - Words that should not be divided

Did you know that single-syllable words are never divided? Of course
you did! But did you know that one-letter divisions aren't okay? That's
what Chicago Manual of Style (7.34) says, so don't divide words like
again and enough.

Also, some words may be misread if divided, so be
very careful with words like water, women, and prayer. CMS says they
should be divided only with reluctance.
