    NOTE FROM JUDY

    1. Following publication of the last edition of Webgrammar's Food for
      Thought
, a subscriber said, "In your latest newsletter you handle the
use of the abbreviations ’ie’ and ‘eg’. I gave up teaching over 20
years ago and even then we were instructed that full stops or periods
were no longer necessary with abbreviations. Other examples are VIP,
      RSVP, CD, etc."

True. But in this case I used Chicago Manual of Style, and a peek at Prentice Hall Reference Guide and Diana Hacker's A Writers Reference reveals that they also use periods. As with so many similar issues, there is no right or wrong. Why not use e.g. and i.e. in more formal writing, and save eg and ie for informal communication? Any thoughts you'd like to share?

            2.   Have you ever thought about how color is a gift? I mean our
perception of color. As I drive around the community, I spot a splash
of flowers with varied colors and my spirits lift. You can find all
kinds of websites that discuss color and how it affects people. An
                  especially interesting site is:
                  http://www.joehallock.com/edu/COM498/associations.html

Enjoy spring! If you live in the northern hemisphere that is.

WINDOWS KEYSTROKES & TIPS - Changing browser text size.

Most websites are set up so you can change the text sixe. While you can
do this through the menu bar, the quick way is to use the Ctrl key plus
the + key. You can press it multiple times. And to reduce text side, use
Ctrl plus the - key. It's just a temporary fix...the next time you open
your browser, it'll be back to the original size.

DID YOU KNOW - Subject/Verb Agreement

Words such as athletics, economics, mathematics, physics, statics, measles,
and news are usually singular, despite their plural form.

Correct: Statistics is among the most difficult courses in the school's
    program.

However, then they describe separate items rather than a collective body
of knowledge, words such as athletics, mathematics, physics, and statistics
    are plural.

Correct: The statistics on school retention rates are impressive.

Reference: A Writer's Reference by Diana Hacker.

THE BASICS OF 3D/4D ULTRASOUND
It is important to understand that sonologists around the world have always conjured three-dimensional images of anatomy or pathology in their minds while doing their 2D scans. However, until recently it was not possible to do this type of reconstruction on patient data acquired using ultrasound. The advent of 3D and 4D ultrasound for the first time allowed us a peek into the mechanics of thinking of a sonologist by acquiring the volume data and allowing us to reconstruct the images in different planes on the ultrasound machine or a workstation.
