NOTE FROM JUDY
1. I hope you've enjoyed the month of April. In Arizona, we've had high winds, rains, beautiful spells of sunshine, and quiet days in terms of weather. Wildflowers fade as cactus blossoms begin to show their beauty. Do any of you take photos of your landscapes, plants, or waterscapes? Isn't it a marvelous way to express creativity?

DID YOU KNOW - WHEN NOT TO USE THE WORD "LADY"
Here we are in the new millennium. And according to The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition, it's best to use the word "lady" or its plural only in conjunction with the word "gentlemen." Why? It's considered by many to be patronizing to say "lady" as a synonym for "woman." CMS says that some will insist on using it to describe a refined woman, but if they've read the CMS caveat, they've been forewarned.

PUBLISHERS' BINDINGS ONLINE 1815-1930: THE ART OF BOOKS All academic libraries have within their holdings books bound in 19th century decorative bindings. These materials are significant in their place within the fabric of American history and culture, but efforts to present these bindings in a collection that is representative of the era as a whole and to make them available virtually, via the World Wide Web have been limited. PBO, a significant digital collection of decorative bindings, along with a comprehensive glossary and guide to the elements of these objects, will strengthen the growing interest in and create broader awareness for this “common” object called the book. http://bindings.lib.ua.edu/

Open to the public in Europe in the 1970s, it eventually shut down because of unsatisfactory conservation conditions in the building that housed it. In the 1980s, preparations were made to exhibit the collection at University of California Santa Barbara, but were halted by state budgetary cutbacks. Twenty years later, the Virtual Egyptian Museum reopens the Senusret Collection to the public. http://www.virtual-egyptian-museum.org/

WRITING/JOURNALISM NEWSEUM Mission: to help the public and the news media understand one another better. The Newseum also celebrates the value of a unique American notion — the First Amendment. The First Amendment — a covenant between the government and the people — assures that no law will suppress the people's right to a free press, to speak freely, to worship, to assemble in public or to petition the government for redress of grievances. We believe that visitors will come to the Newseum as tourists, but leave as supporters of the First Amendment and the vital role a free press plays in a free society. http://www.newseum.org/
