DID YOU KNOW - HOW TO SPLIT AN INFINITIVE
Q. What's an infinitive, and how do we split one (accidentally, of course!)?
A. Diana Hacker says, in A Writer's Reference, that an infinitive consists of "to" plus a verb...like to think, to go, to breathe, to worry. When you place a modifier between the "to" and the verb, you're splitting an infinitive. Is it a crime to do so? No, but it is awkward. Hacker says that if it's obviously awkward you should revise it. Sometimes it's more natural when it's split. But you should totally avoid splitting an infinitive in formal writing.
Her example: Original says, "Patients should try to if possible avoid going up and down stairs." Revised, it says, "If possible, patients should try to avoid going up and down stairs."
Remember, the key to identifying an infinitive is that it begins with "to" followed by a verb.
