NOTE FROM JUDY

  1. My friend, Tom McCarthy, is a gifted photographer. Thank you for letting me repeat myself (smile). He also put together an excellent website for the National League of Postmasters, Hawaii Branch. Do click on the "Photos" link. Stunning photography. And his daughter's artwork is quite special.
    Use the "Art" link.

  2. One of my favorite people is Karen Steffen Chung, a longtime Webgrammar subscriber. She teaches at National Taiwan University. We met again on Facebook, where she pointed me to Ivy League Analytical English. She indicates that the Ivy site itself: http://www.ivy.com.tw/ is open to non-Facebook members, but the interface is completely in Chinese and it requires a Taiwan ID number to register. That's one reason she's posting links to the broadcasts on FB, in English - that way anyone can access them.

For now anyway, you do have to be on Facebook, and here's the URL: http://cli.gs/52vTgd - and if you'd like a free occasional e-newsletter of printed Ivy lessons, send a subscription request to: service@ivy.com.tw.

  1. Another longtime subscriber and favorite, who also teaches at National Taiwan University, is Ann-Marie Hadzima. I recently received the following from her:

Thank you for your Webgrammar Ezine which often entices me to explore new areas of knowledge!

A site you may consider to include in an upcoming issue of the Ezine is http://www.englishcentral.com This site is a relatively new one (started in Nov 2009), which combines videos online (e.g. Youtube.com) and speech recognition technology to let students of English practice speaking the same way the people in the videos speak.

Users select a video and then record themselves saying the lines from the video in a series of short segments. Each segment they record is graded (A+ to D). The idea is for users to re-record the segments to achieve a higher grade. Students achieve points for each video they complete.

The videos are categorized by difficulty level as well as general topic (business, daily life, news & politics, etc). Segments from old Hollywood movies (Breakfast at Tiffany's) as well as rapping flight attendants doing the pre-takeoff safety lecture are included. Users can recommend short videos to be included on the site.

Teachers can sign up for free teacher accounts which allow them to issue 'invitations' to students so the teachers can monitor student use of the site. Teachers can also upload materials for the students to use. Since the website has initially been targeted to Japanese learners of English, there are many short clips featuring President Obama, a role model to many Japanese speakers of English for his oratory skills.

The site is not a replacement for a teacher, especially since it is not sensitive to measure many features/aspects of pronuniciation. Nevertheless, students using it under teacher instruction will get more focused support and practice in speaking English.

GRAMMAR, USAGE and STYLE - WHEN TWO SUBJECTS ARE JOINED BY "AND"

If a subject with two or more parts is joined by "and," is it a compound? Almost always, says Diana Hacker, in A Writer's Reference (G1-c).

However, there are exceptions. When the parts of the subject form a single unit (His natural ability and his desire to serve his country have led to a career in the military.) or when they refer to the same person or thing, treat the subject as singular.

ARTS

THE CROOKED ROAD
The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Music Heritage Trail began as an idea in January 2003. The basis of the idea is to generate tourism and economic development in the Appalachian region of Southwestern Virginia by focusing on the region’s unique musical heritage. Response to the concept from communities, musicians, music venues, and tourism organizations was positive and immediate.

As a result of this enthusiasm, "The Crooked Road" now includes ten counties, three cities, ten towns, five regional planning districts, four state agencies, two tourism organizations, and a large number of music venues.

The primary goal of this website is to enable users to identify crickets, katydids, and cicadas from America north of Mexico.

The males of most species in these groups make loud, persistent calls that attract conspecific females. Because the songs are loud and species specific, they are usually an easy means of identifying the caller.
