    NOTE FROM JUDY

Do you know how painful it is to tell someone that you can't understand what they're saying on the telephone? It's not just humiliating: it's a form of separation. Who wants to telephone someone when it's going to be a one-way conversation?

Many subscribers won't be at all interested in my latest adventure, and it takes up too much space for this ezine, so if you want to read the rest of this, go to
    http://www.ossweb.com/2007/02/hearing_loss_telephones_1.html

I promise to do some crazy illustrations, but have to wait
until my photograper returns from a trip.

Hope you enjoy this edition of Food for Thought!

WINDOWS KEYSTROKES & TIPS - Top of page

Want to get to the top of the page in a hurry? Click your cursor once to ensure that you're actually "in" the page, then use Ctrl+Home. It's a breeze.

DID YOU KNOW - Two abbreviations: e.g. and i.e.

Have you seen "e.g." and "i.e.," and wondered what they really meant?
You use i.e. when you mean "that is." The origin of i.e. is "id est."
You also use i.e. when you're restating the idea (to be more explicit) or expanding upon it.

Example: We provide all retailers with the standard discount, i.e., 10%.

You use e.g. when you mean "for example." The origin of e.g. is "exempli
    gratia."

Example: Shertzer's book has a number of elements, e.g., punctuation,
capitalization, parts of a sentence, and confusing words.

In American English, we generally follow i.e. and e.g. with a comma. And be aware that you most often use abbreviated forms like these in informal or technical documents, or documents where space is at a premium (catalogs, forms, etc.). There's nothing cast in concrete about that little comma!
