    NOTE FROM JUDY

    1. I recently began a complete renovation of webgrammar.com, and will be asking your help from time to time. Right now I'm working on http://www.webgrammar.com/stateresources.html (state resources). If you know of any excellent sites for a particular state's history, will you send it to me? Send from here .
      Thanks
    2. I hope you enjoy this month's links. While I don't have any that are specifically for Writers and Journalists, many of those in the References section will apply. Happy Valentine's Day!

WINDOWS KEYSTROKES & TIPS - How to stop downloading a Web page

Ever popped over to a website and known right away that it is either not where you wanted to go or was going to be full of ads and popups? Use the "Esc" key right away. Then you can either go back or (if you decide to continue on the page) hit the refresh button.

DID YOU KNOW - Is it "chairman" or "chairwoman"?

According to Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition, the best word is "chair." It is widely regarded as the best gender-neutral choice. Since the mid-seventeenth century, says CMS, "chair" has referred to an office of authority.

Online Edition Extra: Incredible vs. Incredulous

Properly used, says CMS, incredible means "unbelievable." It is also used to mean "astonishing" (in a good way).

Incredulous means "disbelieving, skeptical." CMS uses a timely example: "People are incredulous about the rising gas costs."

SQUINT EYES: ARTIST AND INDIAN SCOUT
One of the best known groups of Plains artists was among the men held prisoner at Fort Marion in Saint Augustine, Florida, from 1875-1878. Working far away from home, they developed a distinctive style quite different than that of the many artists who remained in their home communities. Squint Eyes (Tichkematse), a Cheyenne, was one of these prisoner artists.
