NOTE FROM JUDY
1. Joy! Arizona Highways recently informed my sister, Jan Pierson, that her article on our father and his 1940s Native American photo jaunts will be published. In July 2007. They are _that_ backlogged.
2. The former Stumpers List has been changed to Project Wombat. This is an e-mail discussion list for difficult reference questions. The new sponsor is Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation. It's a busy and valuable resource. I use the digest version. Here's the URL if you want to subscribe to Project Wombat. http://www.project-wombat.org/
3. Just received a submission of a website that teaches Hebrew verbs. See grammar section below. Wonderful work by Jacob Richman, who is a computer consultant. http://www.hebrew-verbs.co.il/

DID YOU KNOW - Verbs for "A Number" and "The Number"
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
DID YOU KNOW - How do I make sense of this sentence: "A number of people is going to attend"? Style guides say that most collective nouns are treated as singular, and "is" seems to fit with "number," but it doesn't look or sound right.
Diana Hacker, in A Writer's Reference, Fourth Edition,(Bedford/St. Martin's), (G1-f) says to treat collective nouns as singular unless the meaning is clearly plural. She goes on to explain that in a sentence, the phrase "the number" is treated as singular, and "a number" as plural.
It gives theses examples:
Singular: The number of school-age children is declining.
Plural: A number of children are attending the wedding. Relax. You can say "A number of people are going to attend." Diana Hacker says so!
